Death to No One! Rallying Cry today in Tehran as Sea of Green Takes Over Hostage-taking Anniversary. Media Democracy Day coming this weekend in Vancouver.

By Katherine Dodds

#IranElection is  trending topic on twitter again. 30 years after the Takeover of the US embassy and hostage taking in Tehran, the green movement hijacked the traditionally govn't sanctioned event.  Photos and videos are pouring in from the demonstrations that have been going on. Reza Sayah was on CNN (now on Youtube) -he describes what has been going on. And for a great history of US-Iran relationship going back to the pre-Shah era check out this short youtbube mini-doc.

Important in it's own right, the twitter 'revolution' that #iranelection  is a shining example of, is also a great case study for the power of social media in the struggle for media democracy. HelloCoolWorld will be at this Saturday's Media Democracy Day in Vancouver.

Many links on twitter. Here's one to some pictures from a live blog.

"November 4 is the 30th anniversary of the Iran hostage crisis, a turning point in Iranian history, in the geopolitics of the region and in the troubled history of U.S.-Iran relations. On that day, militants, many of them students, invaded the U.S. embassy in Tehran, taking about 70 Americans as hostages in a drama that would last 444 days." Except from CNN Opinion by Hamid Dabashi.

It's encouraging to see that the protests that were sparked by June's election fall out in Iran are far from over. And nice to see something other then trivia trending again on twitter.

My cohort Colette and I will be at Vancouver's Media Democracy Day this Saturday at the Library -- and following #iranelection on twitter, has for me been both inspiring and a model for how social media is really coming into to it's power as a relevant media tool for democracy. All kinds of media activists are convening to give talks and workshops. Check it out!
