V is for Valentine Virus! Keep on spreading the good stuff

By Katherine Dodds

The Won’t Get Weird Campaign is up and running! And today is Valentine’s Day – which is Good Company’s 6th anniversary – now we are six! We’re proud of the fact that we’ve been putting safe sex in advertising where it belongs since 2001. : ) What better time to celebrate the launch of our new viral video for Options for Sexual Health (OPT).

We’ve been working on this campaign since the summer. We focus tested, and developed messaging to adapt an existing campaign for our BC audience- three “weird” characters: an embarrassed woman, a shocked looking male youth, and a disapproving mother figure are featured on three brightly colored bus ads. The tag line: “Talk about sex and some people get weird.”(Associated with the “weirdoes”) followed by “We Won’t” placed near the wontgetweird.com URL. Then we created two others to primarily promote the 1-800-Sex Sense line with the OPT icons and a parallel tag “It’s not weird to ask.” And after all these years of many, many youth telling us they liked pink – we finally gave them one pink ad. Now two of the five bus ads are on each translink bus across BC! We also built and launched the bc.wontgetweird.com website for OPT — the first network of its kind in BC. It’s designed to help connect people to non-judgmental sexual health resources wherever they are located, even if it’s far from an urban centre. And now thanks to a collaboration with Mobile Muse, we also got to turn the campaign characters into a viral video. For this campaign we are using our HelloCoolWorld tools to partner with OPT to get the word out. Check out the flash animation on our campaign page and send it, along with our viral valentine to everyone you know!

This entire campaign follows last year’s pioneering project with OPT – the “back to school” sex-ed flyer that was direct mailed to 1.3 million homes in BC. It was advocating better sex education in schools and got a lot of attention from individuals and the media. We love OPT – they have been one of our primary clients since Good Company was formed. They have an amazing team of people who accomplish many important things and haven’t been telling the world how great they are as much as they should! But these campaigns mark the beginning of an exciting new era for OPT. During the past half year we also had the privilege of working with Jason Mogus and his colleagues at Communicopia as they prepared a strategic visioning document for OPT’s new organizational website.

Stand True—Haisla Youth Video in post production

We are also in the middle of editing together the video for the Haisla youth in Kitimaat Village that we spent several days with in January doing a video workshop. The “Star in Your Own Stories” workshop was developed in collaboration with Chee Mamuk (BC Centre for Disease Control) and combined HIV/STI prevention and sexuality education with video training. Stay tuned for more information on their video: “Stand True”. It will premiere in their community in March.
