Nancy Bleck is an artist, photographer and community builder as well as personal friend who has been an inspiration to me for as long as I have known her, which is about 16 years! We’ve traveled together, from London to Prague to Utrecht, and of course, closer to home — Sims Creek! I’ve watched her and her work grow over the years. She’s also worked on many of Good Company’s campaigns. And one of the more incredible things she has accomplished has been to co-found the Uts’am Witness Project. utsam-witness.ca
She is being honoured with this award for her deep connection with the Squamish Nation community and their traditional lands. Because of her work as co-founder of the innovative and groundbreaking Uts’am/Witness project, and in recognition of her contributions to the community through her photographs, she has been honoured with a traditional name, Slanay Sp’ak’wus (Eagle Woman). Her work has connected both indigenous and non-indigenous communities, and changed public and environmental arts practices in this province. She has created new models for cross-cultural work and environmental sustainability.

For ten years, thousands of people (including artists, loggers, government officials, tourists, youth at risk, families, and children) made the journey from the urban landscape to threatened areas of “wilderness” as participants in the Uts’am/Witness project. These weekend journeys, hosted by Chief Williams, brought people into direct contact with ceremony and with powerful nature; with Squamish stories, dance, games, art, and opportunities to hear from elders, scientists, conservationists, and artists from non-native traditions.
This Exhibition features the work of artists close to this project in the last decade, including Nancy Bleck, Aaron Nelson Moody, Cease Wyss, Xwa Lac Tun (Rick Harry), Tracy Williams, and Mark Robinson.
