Happy Halloween! (with a touch of LACE)

By Katherine Dodds

It's pumpkin carving day! But first...a little revelling in LACE!

It is Halloween, but all I can think of is LACE. There's  also lots going on in the coming weeks at Hello Cool World - but before I tell you about Media Democracy Day, the new films we are working on, and the soon to be ramped up Campaign For Organ Donation centred around Eva Markvoort's story  in 65_Red Roses... I just have to take a moment to revel in this past week of Pap celebrations. Because it was a resounding success!

As of yesterday, the LACE campaign has officially wrapped on Pap Awareness Week 2010! (#PAW2020) to you twitterers. We will be formally reporting on the success of the week, but though the entire team is a bit exhausted we are beyond excited about how well it all went.

Over 120 Clinics, and even more volunteers signed up to help us. We had clinics reporting that they did 50 Paps, that they had to put on extra days, and that they were running out of posters. One clinic reported that they had a full house for their drop in evening, and most heartwarmingly, woman came who had not had a Pap in many many years, those we wanted to reach the most.

Women of all ages, rural and urban, and from different communities particpated. We had many First Nations communities embrace the event. We also had materials translated into Punjabi and into Chinese. In one more remote community, the clinic mailed out postcard out to every woman in town due for a Pap. And they came in droves!

Volunteers held tables and events around the province giving away treats. (In Vancouver we were able to deliver 250 Ethical Bean donated organic & fair trade doughnuts!) UBC students made cupcakes. And in one place volunteers recreated the LACE icing on doughnuts from our spring photoshoot. Our volunteers reported that they kept seeing our posters when they went to put up more. Many women entered our "Tell Us Yours" contest to gather more good reasons to get your Pap. Some of those stories will end up on our website soon.

And most overwhelmingly, the atmosphere was festive. This is what we dreamed of when we first created the LACE Campaign - that we could turn this important - but let's face it not that pleasant test - into an empowering experience to promote women and their health.

I can't wait to do it again.

- Kat and the ENTIRE hard-working LACE team of: Lizzy, David, Sandy, Terry, Atef, Melissa, Kirsten, Zy, and our team of amazing volunteers.
