Does your daughter have immunity? Help us create a new health campaign to protect your family and community!

By Michelle Reid

Are you a parent with a daughter who is between grades 6 and 11?

Hello Cool World is looking for advocates for healthy families to participate in an information sharing session in Vancouver.

We know you’re passionate about supporting health for your loved ones—that’s why LACE Campaign was such a huge success! Together we worked to promote women’s health, culminating in hundreds of women from all around the province taking control of their health and getting a Pap test during Pap Awareness Week 2010 in October.

We were so glad to learn that there’s massive support around BC for initiatives to promote preventative health measures like Pap tests—so we’re launching a new campaign with ImmunizeBC to spread the word about the value of immunizations: I Have Immunity.

We’re starting off with a focus on one of the newest immunizations available, which prevents infection by Human Papililomavirus (HPV). More than 80% of women will be infected with strains of HPV during their lifetime. Some HPV infections lead to cervical cancer, from which 50 women in BC die each year. The vaccine protects against the strains of HPV responsible for 70% of cervical cancer cases.

The HPV vaccine is a safe, effective form of prevention that protects women’s health (especially when combined with routine Pap tests and conversations with a health care provider). Best of all, while it’s recommended for women from ages 9-26, it’s free for girls who are still in school in BC and were born in 1994 or later!

It’s possible that the girls and women being immunized today will live to see cervical cancer disappear. We want your help to make cervical cancer a disease of the past. If you’re a parent with a daughter born after 1994, please join us in creating a campaign that will raise awareness about the HPV vaccine. Together we can prevent infections and end cervical cancer.

If you’re interested in getting involved in the I Have Immunity campaign, please contact Michelle Reid at michelle@hellocoolworld.com for more details.
