A STONE'S THROW LAUNCHES IN BRIDGEWATER NOVA SCOTIA
By
Katherine Dodds
A Stone’s Throw deals very specifically with cyanide heap leaching and the re-opening of abandoned gold mines and the subsequent environmental repercussions on the neighbouring communities. Sadly, in Moose River Nova Scotia over 655 acres of land including over 400 acres of wilderness and woods could soon be torn up in a massive operation by an Australian gold mining company who intend to excavate, blast crush and process over 27 tonnes of rock and ore. After using cyanide to extract the particles of gold they will then discharge 2.5 million cubic meters a year of waste water into nearby lakes and waterways.
The protagonist in A Stone’s Throw is fighting the re-opening of a gold mine which many in the small community are celebrating as they perceive the new job opportunities offered as a significant boost to the local economy. While the film is set in an unnamed fictional small town in Nova Scotia, the story could really be about anywhere in Canada where private interests, complacency and short term employment too often trump the environment and the concerns for long term sustainability.
As the timing of the film and the announcement about the mines coincided so closely, the environmental group opposing the mine, Eastern Shore Forest Watch, www.forestwatch.ca will be using the film to help gather support and increase awareness of the environmental impact of the proposed mine. Elizabeth May of the Green Party has offered to be interviewed together with director Camelia Frieberg about the larger issues that the film opens up including rural sustainability and the balancing of jobs and the environment.
