A Frenzy of Films and Forums

By Katherine Dodds

It's a frighteningly busy week for us at HelloCoolWorld, we are in the midst of launching the promotion for a very fabulous film — Winter Soldier, and tying it in with our already ongoing promotion for Scared Sacred. We hope to do some co-promo for these films with the World Peace Forum that starts later this week.

In the meantime, the World Urban Forum (WUF) is underway now. I tried to pick up my delegates' badge from the Vancouver Convention Centre, command central for the WUF but alas it was after 5pm. Oops. Try again tomorrow. Thursday is the day that a short film made about Habitatjam will debut. Since I was involved in the "jam" as part of the team that sat out at IBM in Burnaby for the 72 hours that the jam was live, it will be very exciting to see what comes out of it all and to read the report on "actionable" ideas that myself and my team had a small part in creating. Now available HERE.

The Jam was a truly ground-breaking experiment and the largest live online conversation ever held. There were 40 thousand participants from all the UN countries. For those attending WUF that would like to contribute to the ongoing discussion there is a networking session on Thursday June 22 at 1:30 – 3:30 in Room 12.

The session will start off with the movie (10-12 minutes) 10 minutes by IBM speaking about JAMs followed by a panel session discussion the topic: The Future of JAMs for the World Urban Forum – Should they continue?" Panelists so far: Charles Kelly as moderator, Lars Reutersward – UN-HABITAT, Jan Peterson – Chair of the Huairou Commission and GROOTS, Doug Ragan – Senior Manager for Environmental Youth Alliance and World Urban Forum Youth (or delegate), Robert Neuwirth
– Author of "Shadow Cities" and Moderator from the JAM.

Back to promoting World Peace...

Scared Sacred was described as one of the top 10 peace films of all time by Now Magazine (check out filmmaker Velcrow Rippers blog), and Winter Soldier was first released in 1972. It's a harrowing and extremely moving account of the realities of the war in Viet Nam, told with no-holds-barred by many veterans. As a filmmaker and promoter of documentaries I found the extra features inspiring. Especially the recent conversation with Winter Film Collective, 10 filmmakers who made the film together, and who talk about the impact the making of the film had on some of the veterans, and on them as filmmakers. There is power in documentation, and of course in distribution! We are really pleased to be working with Milliarium Zero Films on this release as we all share a real interest in how to use titles like this to promote social justice. One of our goals with this website, and our web store, is to create a sustainable model for distribution, not only of films, but also ideas. And if we can connect the ideas to movements, that's even better.

Hi Katherine, do you know where I can watch/download the short film made about Habitatjam? I followed the Jam very closely and have just put together a research proposal on the Jam. Showing/Linking to the film would be of great help for me. Thanks and best wishes, Matthias http://www.zebralog.de/en
