Is this Vandalism?! NO! It's your Grandma's Graffitti

By Katherine Dodds

ANONYMOUS HEALTH CAMPAIGNERS TIE ONE ON! At least that's what the headlines seem to say...

And taken to even greater heights in an attempt to remind BC women to get their Pap tests!

We are midway through #Pap11, Pap Awareness Week, and LACE campaigners have been hitting the streets all over town. (For real, not just in photoshop!) The best way to stalk these health crusaders is by following @LACEcampaign @Pap11 on Twitter, or following them on LACEbook.

LACE volunteers in Englsh Bay in Vancouver and in Kelowna. Just a few of the LACE moments in the campaign so far.

LACE campaigners can only dream that they can take their mission of spreading the LACE as far as the mountain tops, but it's not a fantasy to hope is that not only will everyone know about the campaign, but that they will forever associate all LACE with their "Live Aware Creat Empowerment" message to promote cervical health and prevent cervical cancer. We can do it people spread the cervix love and tie on the LACE!

Check out the whole story. The spoof Vancouver "Sum" copy is below.

(warning: parody and humour used. But the subject is still serious!)

In a campaign to remind women of the importance of Pap tests, street teams take LACE to new heights.

By LACE LARUE  Vancouver Sum

Vancouverites woke up to a startling – if pretty – view this morning. Famous landmarks around the city had been been given an overnight make-over, decorated with enormous and colourful lace bows. From the Lions Gate Bridge to the gates of Chinatown, Vancouver’s most travelled attractions showed off a new, more feminine style, courtesy of a team of women’s health activists from the LACE Campaign.

LACE, or “Live Aware. Create Empowerment.,” is a grassroots campaign to promote Pap testing and cervical cancer awareness. This week marks the beginning of Pap Awareness Week, a national week of action where clinics across B.C. offer easy access to screening until October 29.

Guerrilla health activists tie a ribbon on city landmarks

“We chose to strike at the beginning of Pap Awareness Week because it’s never been easier to get your Pap test, “ says Lois Lace, LACE’s unofficial leader. “Women can go to LACEcampaign.com and find their local clinics, with many featuring drop-in times and gift bags for patients.”

Vancouver’s not the only city to get in touch with their feminine side. LACE enthusiasts have been carpetting their local communities province-wide. Reports of lace in strange places have turned up from Fort St. John to Squamish to Lax Kw’alaams. Lace of any shape, size or colour is the symbol of the campaign, with women tying lace bows as visual reminders to get their Paps.

“This isn’t vandalism; it’s city beatification!” Lace laughs. “This is your grandma’s graffiti.”
