Summer Celebrations Scrapbook... Awards, creative conspiracies, blogcasts, and promotion as content!

By Katherine Dodds

Katherine Dodds in her "Gatsby get up" for the Spotlight Gala at Hycroft.

The summer is speeding by. A quick mind-reconnaissance of the past two weeks sees us sipping champagne to celebrate the Woman of Vision Award that Women in Film and Video Vancouver honoured me with at their Gatsby-themed Spotlight Gala. (Was it already two weeks ago??)

GCC Principal David Griffith in a transcendent moment.

GCC's Lindsey Wasserman frolics in the foreground. David, Make Believe Media's Lynn Booth and Jude MacInnes talking to CBC's Rob Egan (formerly CEO of BC Film), in the background.

No Woman is an Island!

While I was of course thrilled to get the award, I have to acknowledge that it represents the work of my entire team* who invariably has to put up with my mad ravings to help me turn these "visions" into reality. (And who aren't lacking in some of their own.) The award was for "a woman who demonstrates leadership and vision in an enterprise or project that combines traditional entertainment media with the use of new technologies."

Sharing the vision – is The Corporation's Mark Achbar who, with his partner Siobhan Flanagan, nominated me for the award. Phillip Djwa of Djwa Strategies was a cohort and in the first incarnations of TheCorporation.com website and the "I-Corp" project. Picking up the reigns, and helping me create "Corp 2.0" (beta, beta, it's always beta...) is my GCC business partner David Griffith, who has been a technical and creative co-conspirator since I founded GCC in 2001.

What is so exciting for me in being awarded "Woman of Vision", is that it recognizes the blurry boundaries between promotion and content and the role that the digital "multiply" (as opposed to the digital divide, lol) plays in idea distribution, the business we are in here are HelloCoolWorld.

Urban Rush

I got to talk about this a little on Urban Rush, a popular Vancouver Shaw Cable show. (This time, because of the award I was the one being interviewed, after having sent them many guests in the past!)

Katherine feeling very short between Urban Rush hosts Fiona Forbes, and Michael Eckford!

While I was waiting in the green room, they asked me to draw something on a little slate board that they use to shoot bumpers As usual I started by getting a little complex.... "Yikes, that looks like Science!" was very tall hostess Fiona's response.

Illustrating the vision: the HelloCoolWorld "formula" I drew on my slate for the bumpers for my appearance on Urban

OK – so I geek out on diagrams. (Check out our interim portfolio page :)) But the "formula" for this vision is simple – in order to get results, outcome needs to be factored into the equation — a feedback loop (or feed forward really) of strategy and design and outcome. In the centre of this loop are three things that all need to happen in order to fuel this process:

  1. Technology
  2. Content
  3. Outreach

Integrating all of them is the operating principal!

In the land of blogging, this is the power of citizen journalism. Yes, go ahead, D. I. Y. ! But, the role for citizen marketing is also crucial.

Michael got very very excited about our BLOGCASTER, (Because he is self-admitted blog aficionado and blog geek). My cohort David created this nice little bit of code, (see the campaign page to find out more)

PS. The day after the Women in Film gala I got news from the Canada Council that they are giving me a travel grant to attend a very cool festival in Brazil called Visible Evidence.

More about blogcasters, and Brazil in my next installment...

Blogcast your nets!

*More Thank Yous!
In addition to WIFVV, Mark, Siobhan, Phillip and David this is an opportunity to thank a few more people. My sister Marian Dodds who put the rabble rousing bug in me at an early age. Kitchen Sink Entertainment's Danielle Prohom Olson, friend and inspiration, who set me on this path well over a decade ago and who is a "Woman of Vision" in her own right. Lynn Booth who gave me a crucial prod to start up Good Company as well as being a constant friend and support over the years. Terry Sunderland, whose graphic designs have made us all look good, as well as being a dear friend. Lindsey Wasserman who has been keeping our office (and us!) on track since last summer. Nancy Bleck, visionary, friend, and world class photographer.

Constant partners in video crime, over many years are: Paul Lang, Sean Lang, and David Ng. And there were so many people who worked for years on The Corporation, The Take, and Scared Sacred's grassroots teams: Christine Daniels, Colette Gunson, Chrissy Poulos, Sandy Haksi and Ayala Sender. Thanks also to our GCC web team: Shayne Kasai and Zoe Neil-St. Clair. And of course our i-Corp prototype team: Co- Creative Director Phillip Djwa; Programmers Darko Hrgovic, Dan Leroux, David Griffith; Writers Catherine Schulmann and Lisa MacIntosh; Designers Terry Sunderland, Stella Archer; Multi-media Boy Friday Sean Lang; and consultant Weston Triemstra. Anyone else??
