GOOD MORNING, AMERICA!
By
Katherine Dodds
This morning, it is, as my friend Terry said last night when I phoned him from the party, a good day to wake up. Reporting from the party hosted by herself and husband Mark Achbar, here is what Siobhan Flanagan had to say about the refreshments served:
"We toasted Obama’s victory with a tribute cocktail of our own devising, a variation on Buck’s Fizz that is also champagne-based, but subtstitutes orange with pineapple juice in recognition of his birthplace, Hawaii. It is named Barack’s Fizz™, for which we currently retain all international rights, but are willing to release into the public domain in the new president's spirit of inclusion, so that no drinker may be left behind."
On an equally spirited, but less alcoholic note, I feel a renewed sense of hope, and most significant, I didn't realize how much hope I wasn't feeling until now.
For the first time, I'd rather be an a American than the Canadian that I am. So Americans, congratulations! And Canadians -- can we please reinvent the sad state of politics in this country? And to all of us social-change workers, unite in the knowledge that there is a lot of work to do.
In Vancouver we have a civic election that might re-vamp this city. So now it's time to turn closer to home and say share the Vision - Go Gregor!
