What Is a Pap Test?
By
Michelle Reid

We hope by now you've noticed that we think Paps are important for your health! But many women aren't sure what a Pap test is checking for, and what to expect.
In 2010, we produced a great video with nurse Sarah Levine, where she explains step-by-step what will happen during a Pap test. If you're planning to get your first Pap this year, watching it is a great way to prepare!
An important point to note is that a Pap test is not an STI test. As explained on the BC Cancer website (and on the back of our LACE cards!), a Pap test is only checking for abnormal changes to the cervix that may be pre-cancerous or cancerous. While you can ask for an STI test at the same appointment, an STI test does not check for cervical cancer, and a Pap test does not check for STIs.
In addition, an abnormal test result does not mean you have cervical cancer. Most mildly abnormal cells clear up on their own, and even most moderate or severely abnormal cells do not lead to cervical cancer. So don't panic! By getting Pap tests regularly, you can be sure to catch any abnormal result early and find out what it means. It's always better to be informed about your health.
The BC Cancer Cervical Cancer Screening page provides more information on Pap tests, including what they are testing for, how long it takes to get the results, and what to expect if you have an abnormal test result.
Want to share your experience of getting a Pap test? Was it what you expected? Did you learn something new about your health by getting a Pap? We'd love for you to contribute a blog post- contact us by email, Facebook, or Twitter!
