Teens and Dating (7)

This September, WAVAW will be reaching out to teenagers in Vancouver high schools with an innovative new program aimed at preventing violence. Using thought-provoking and engaging activities created specifically for youth, the program works to raise awareness about violence and motivate young people to take action in making their communities safer for everyone.
Students will learn how to:
- Investigate the root causes of violence
- Think critically about how socialization through the media impacts our bodies and minds
- Think about how we value one another in society and to strive for equality
- Begin thinking about what leadership looks like and what it means to intervene as a bystander
Dalya has worked at WAVAW since 2005 and has been involved with the Super Power Project since the beginning! Dalya's passion is working with youth and finding new and creative ways of engaging our future leaders in issues related to violence against women and social justice

At our last months WAVAW youth advisory meeting our topic of conversation for the evening was about media and its impacts on self esteem/self worth.
We watched a film directed by Sut Jhally with Jean Kilbourne called "Killing Us Softly 3: Advertising's Image of Women" and then went on to discuss an item that a co-worker had brought into the office...the "Super Model Gum" (image above).
I asked youth who were interested, to write about what they thought of the gum packaging. It seemed so blatantly obvious to me that it was merely re-inscribing messages to young girls, that they must be thin and starve themselves to be noticed and hold value in the world, but I was curious about what our youth thought.
