Writing...witnessing...

Yesterday David and I showed the latest cut of the Uts'am trailer to Nancy and Chief Bill -- and it was a good feeling that they liked it!
I am reminded of my favorite saying by my grad school advistor -- feminist scholar Griselda Pollock: "the relief of signification".
When theory is your drug, but populist marketing is your task, making the meaning, clearly meaningful is a pretty big high. It's made me feel like writing again. Good thing... cuz writing is what now needs to be done for the Uts'am book.
Working on the Witness trailer is like witnessing the process all over again. David dug out some footage of John and old video from the project, it's quite something to see this footage from 10 years ago. The challenge now is to not become mired in the potential sidetracks, ALL THE STORIES, but arrive at the heart of the matter.
At least for this moment. And for the moment, finding the point at which Uts'am uniqueness is defined, as well as it's example. And remembering the very real tension that first weekend is a good start.
it does make me sad, that John is gone. He would be enjoying this part of the project. That old mountain goat! His nickname should have been "Long John" from his trademark hiking outfit.
John, you are remembered, and you are missed.
