Pleasure Files: Part 2

By Bella Sie

Pleasure is always on our minds at Hello Cool World, which is why we're titilated to bring you Part 2 of the Pleasure Files. In this installment, Katherine Dodds has a chat with Hello Cool World's Research Associate and the creator of DatingConfidential.ca, Cindy Masaro.

Cindy is a nurse and UBC PhD candidate who has launched an online survey to determine how new communication technologies influence new relationship development, and how that in turn affects sexual behaviour. Keep reading to learn more about the survey!

With 11 years of experience working in the STI clinic of the BC Centre for Disease Control, Cindy has learned that the research and education around sexual health is failing to address the needs of women over 25. The academic world is starting to notice too- a 2010 study found that adults over 40 had the lowest rates of condom use, compared to the high rates among teenagers. This suggests teens and young adults are receiving the messages targeted to them in media and education, but that adults aren't receiving those same messages- or aren't being targeted effectively.

Dating Confidential was created to understand this demographic and how, in the era of online dating, texting, Facebook, and Google searches for your dinner date's name, women develop feelings of trust and intimacy in sexual relationships. The way we build relationships has changed- and so Cindy is changing the way we research those relationships too, using the same technology! Find out more about her survey at DatingConfidential.ca.ca, or check out the Dating Confidential Facebook Page and Twitter!

We couldn't be happier about working with Cindy on a project that is breaking new ground in research and research methdology. This Friday, September 23rd, you'll have the chance to ask Cindy your own questions at our event, Social Media and Health Promotion. Not in Vancouver? No problem- we'll also be live-streaming it! Tune in to the for updates, and follow the hashtag Hello Cool World Twitter#SMWhealth for more about our event.

Putting Sex in Advertising Where It Belongs!

FROM RISK TO PLEASURE MANAGEMENT

This website & blog is a space to showcase our Sex Ed clients and reflect on our work and philosophy around sexual health and advertising. It's a portal to campaigns, but it's also an exploration of our process, as well as our beliefs around what works to promote safer sex, healthy relationships & sexual rights, and why we think the key to being effective is to address "the pleasure deficit" in sexual health education.
