Burnaby/New Westminster - March 13, 2011

5K Run To Raise Awareness of Sexually Exploited Youth

Youth from the Burnaby-New Westminster Task Force on Sexually Exploited and At-Risk Youth will be hosting a 5km Awareness Run. This event is open to the public and you can register with Burnaby Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services by visiting or calling any recreation centre or go on-line to: www.events.runningroom.com. Chilliwack - March 7 & 10, 2011

1) Parenting in a Cyber Age - March 7th

The RCMP, Ministry for Children and Family Development, Pacific Community Resources Society and Chilliwack Community Services - Youth Services are pleased to be hosting free public events to raise awareness on the issue of sexual exploitation of children and youth in our community. Admissions to these events are FREE. All community members are welcomed and encouraged to attend. At the end of the sessions there will be opportunities to network and ask questions. Refreshments will be provided.

This workshop familiarizes parents and professionals with online youth culture. The presentation will cover a description of online environments, responsible online behaviours, online high-risk behaviours and their consequences, and the permanence of digital images and their implications. Handout materials to support participants continued learning and links to specific online resources for parents and professionals will be provided.

2) "Taking care of ourselves, taking care of others" (TC02) - March 10th

Children of the Street Society will be presenting a workshop titled "Taking care of ourselves, taking care of others" (TCO2). This presentation will be specific to parents and professionals and will include: recruitment tactics, warning signs of exploitation, domestic trafficking, violence and drugs in the sex trade, exploitation over the Internet, non-commercial forms of exploitation, males in the sex trade, barriers to exiting the sex trade, community resources, and how to get help. This workshop will be open to the public. Parents and professionals are encouraged to attend.

This workshop will focus on providing tools for parents, foster parents and the public on Internet literacy and safety information. Anyone is welcome to attend.

The Vancouver Community Action Team (VCAT) is proud to partner with the City of Vancouver and the Ministry of Public Safety & Solicitor General, Victim Services and Crime Prevention Branch to offer a FREE professional development workshop for service providers. 

This presentation is designed for social workers, youth probation officers, community and recreation staff, and any service providers working with at risk or sexually exploited youth.
