The Uts'am / Witness Book Project

A photography book about the Uts’am/Witness Project — ‘Picturing Transformation Nexw-áyantsut’ — showcasing the artwork of Nancy Bleck Slànay Sp’ákw’us, is in the works. (Release Date Winter 2013, publishers Figure 1 Publishing). The book includes selections from a 15-year body of photographic documentation and artwork and tells the compelling story of a highly successful collaboration, which spanned a decade and, in the end, saved a beloved part of the Squamish Nation traditional territory from logging.

Project co-founders Nancy Bleck Slànay Sp’ákw’us and Squamish Nation Hereditary Chief Bill Williams telàsemkin-siyam co-authored the book along with Katherine Dodds of Hello Cool World. Woven into the narrative are interviews with many of the projects key participants, and with the late John Clarke Xwexwselken, the project’s other co-founder.

Please Support Our Project!

Over the next year, through the promotion of the forthcoming book, we have a unique opportunity to re-engage the Uts’am community and to connect this work to ongoing important dialogues over environmental protection and First Nations land issues in Canada.

In order to keep the hard-cover art book accessible to as wide an audience as possible we need to keep it's price point under $40. In addition to major donors, we are planning to use crowd-funding and book pre-sales to raise the money required for longer term community engagement process and to subsidize the publishing process.
