‘Picturing Transformation, Nexw-áyantsut’, is a gorgeous art-quality coffee table book that tells the photographic story of 10,000 citizens working together over 10 years in creativity, ceremony and activism to save a beloved part of the Squamish Nation traditional Territory, now known as Nexw-áyantsut, from logging.

Showcasing over 15 years of photographic artwork by Uts’am /Witness project co-founder Nancy Bleck. Written by Katherine Dodds with Chief Bill Williams and Nancy Bleck, the book will be released Fall 2013 by Figure 1 Publishing. This book has an initial print run of 5000 and will be marketed across Canada as a highly anticipated first release from this new up and coming publisher, which includes the same creative team that we were formerly working with at D & M.

Sponsorship Opportunity: Picturing Transformation, Nexw-áyantsut’ book. (Published by Figure 1 Publishing, Fall 2013)

Sponsorship Rates

• We are seeking 2- 4 major sponsors for 5-10K, and 10 sponsors at 2K.

Bulk Pre-Sales

• We are offering the bulk pre-sales of the book at $18/each, minimum QTY 100 if pre-bought by May 15, 2013. The book will retail at $39.95.

Donor Rewards and ROI

All donors will be credited in the book. Major donors from 5 – 10K will be credited with a logo and short statement about their organization/project.

All donors will also have logos and links on our website, and will be acknowledged in social media promotion, including with a logo on our book trailer. We could discuss potential additional promotion for the higher end donors in our future digital extensions (videos and blogs showcasing additional material and excerpts from the book).

Why Now?

Over the coming months through the promotion of the forthcoming book, together we have a unique opportunity to re-engage the Uts’am community and to connect this work to ongoing important and urgent dialogues over environmental protection and First Nations land issues in Canada. The promotion of this book could in itself be a catalyst to get support for like-minded projects. With a full partnership at the top end of the sponsorship scale, there could be an opportunity to bring the Uts’am Ceremony to relevant community events.

This website will be revamped as the book launch approaches, gathering stories from past Witness participants, linking the project to ongoing movements around the environment and First Nations Land. The website will also showcase the ongoing new work done around the project, in particular the carving process for the final Cedar woman figure in the house post style by Squamish Nation carver Aaron Nelson-Moody/ Tawx’sin Yxwulla/ Poolxtun from his Cedar Woman series, which began when Witness launched.

All of this will help drive pre-sales of the book, and generate investment funding in funding future phases of the project including the photographic exhibitions.

We are open to other mutually beneficial collaborations with our sponsors especially around the creation of the digital extensions and in revisiting the Uts’am community to engage around the issues in the book!

Thank you!

The Ask

We need  $25,000 from sponsorship to print the book. We also we need partnerships to help us engage supporters to pre-buy the book, by promoting sales, and through bulk-presales that could be re-sold at the retail price when the book is published.

Why do we need support?

In order to keep the hard-cover art book accessible to as wide an audience as possible we need to keep its price point under $40. In addition to major donors, we are planning to use crowd-funding and book pre-sales to raise the money required for longer term community engagement process, to support a travelling exhibition, and to subsidize the publishing process.

Project co-founders Nancy Bleck Slànay Sp’ákw’us and Squamish Nation Hereditary Chief Bill Williams telàsemkin-siyam co-authored the book along with Katherine Dodds of Hello Cool World. Woven into the narrative are interviews with many of the projects key participants, and with the late John Clarke Xwexwselken, the project’s other co-founder.
