Recruiting Young Haisla Warriors in the Fight Against HIV/AIDS

Lights, camera, action! And education, empathy, and empowerment. The magic of film has transformed a dozen high school students from the Haisla First Nations of Kitamaat Village, BC, Canada into advocates for HIV/AIDS and sexual health awareness.

Together with Chee Mamuk, we gave the students tutorials in how to use film equipment and information about HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections. They were then encouraged to write their own screenplay and shoot their own short film. The theme they chose: What rumours can do in a community. Good AttaDUDEs: His and Hers Heroes Under Construction
We’ve partnered with WAVAW Rape Crisis Centre on a unique youth-driven project to prevent violence against women and girls. The initiative was awarded a BC government Partners in Prevention Grant and will combine hands-on new media workshops with an online campaign to promote a "his and hers" approach to building healthy attitudes within relationships.
