Give Something Big

Give Something Big is a follow up to Inter Pares' 2007 holiday giving campaign called Solidarity Not Stuff! Although we personally liked its anti-consumer appeal and political bent, we decided to take a different tack. Convincing people to opt out of the holidays is a tough sell no matter how much we disdain the overt commercialism that turns gift-giving into the obligatory exchange of products. Instead we wanted to embrace the spirit of giving and offer people an ethical and environmentally friendly way to connect with the holidays that's in keeping with their values.

We also wanted to do more than create holiday-themed cards that support social change via donation — we wanted to create cards that captured the essence of what a gift to Inter Pares represents. We spent some time trying to distil the core values of Inter Pares and came up with social justice, peace, and equality. Their work goes a lot further than that but these were the three concepts that showed up consistently.

We had a lot of fun creating characters that represented a good cross-section of different archetypes (but still feel like someone we actually know), and tried to imbue a charmful whimsy that would stand in contrast to the seriousness of the gift. We put together a "Do It Yourself" card engine where donors can make and send the animated card of their choice. Give it a whirl above by clicking on the gifts at the top and the characters at the bottom. Each character has a signature music piece that plays when they're selected.

Celebrating Alternatives

Alternative giving, where a donation is made in lieu of a gift (also referred to as "pay it forward"), is becoming more popular especially around the holidays. Alternative gift fairs, which gather charities and non-profits into one location, have been popping up all over the place. You get to know the groups in your community and can make tribute donations for loved ones, not to mention giving the frenzied retail action a miss.

Part 2: Giving Back

Last night at Yoga Jamine was reading some of her cheesy new age stuff and she said something that triggered me. She spoke about this idea of non-stealing. Non-stealing was to acknowledge, everything we "steal" from the world around us, be thankful for it and find ways to give back.

Give Something Big
My brother and sister and I stopped giving each other presents years ago. We were all students, none of us had much money. We could only afford to give each other small things, things that we didn't need as much as we needed the money we would have spent on the small things to give each other.

If you spin it right and make the right purchases, you can still feel good about the season and, I think, you can spread the Christmas cheer even further.

Give something big this year

Not big in the consumer sense of the word, but big in the impact a small gift or act can have in the struggle for social justice, equality and peace around the globe.

WORKING TOGETHER...
AMONG EQUALS

We weren't the only one involved in bringing Give Something Big to life. Exvisu Strategic Network Intelligence was involved in the early stages to look at the blog conversations about Inter Pares’ program areas, and online giving campaigns in general. Their analysis was a big influence on how the campaign was developed.
