Imagine the very last day of homelessness in Vancouver. No one sleeping in doorways. No calling around for hours to get a shelter bed. Imagine it.
When I’m doing my job, walking around the streets in the downtown eastside, it sometimes feels like there will never be an end to homelessness. It can feel hopeless and overwhelming. That's why I was so struck watching the new video from activists at PIVOT legal society. They've made a hopeful "newscast" covering the day in the future when the last homeless person in the city gets a place to live. Check it out - it's so much fun to watch.
They're running a campaign to support Bill C-304, which calls for a national housing strategy in Canada. They're encouraging people to write to provincial and federal politicians in support of safe, affordable, adequate housing for all Canadians. They have some new features coming to the site that I’m pretty curious about, too, like a YIMBY (YES In My Backyard) kit. Awesome.
I love the campaign. As I watched the video, I kept thinking "Why not? Why can't we end homelessness anyway? Homelessness isn’t inevitable... we just need to make it a priority.” So, please write to Federal Housing Minister Finley and Provincial Minister of Housing and Social Development Rich Coleman this week. Tell them, and your friends and co-workers that an end to homelessness is entirely possible. I, for one, will be walking around in the cold this afternoon with a hopeful new vision in my head: the news report on the last day of homelessness.
