DVDs are IN!

Last Thursday was a pretty exciting day, we received the first batch of 65_RedRoses dvds!!! For people who pre-ordered the film in Canada and the US, dvds are now on their way to you!  I wish Eva was here to see these – they’re real dvds with a proper case and everything! Now it feels like a real movie, I can hold it in my hands! We all worked so hard to get to this point.

I read all the comments that come in and Phil and I are really hoping that we can start sending copies overseas, we keep getting these lovely messages from people in the Netherlands and Peru and Australia. Eva had an international following and we want everyone to get to see the film that she spent the last three years of her life making and promoting. There are logistical issues right now but I think that in the next few months we should be able to figure out an affordable way to get them out there…

For the moment we are trying to share the film with our fellow Canadians. Last week I got an invitation from the law firm Hwang Company in New Westminster to come out to an event called Show & Shine and sell dvds. Michael Hwang is a lawyer and a great supporter of the arts (the world needs more people like him!) and his offices are currently displaying the original 65 Red Roses painting on their main wall.  Show & Shine, for those of you who don’t live in New Westminster, is referred to as “the largest car show in the lower mainland.”  It seemed liked a great chance to hand out organ donor cards and sell copies of the film, so on World Cup Sunday I piled boxes of dvds and donor cards into my car and headed to New West – with my aunt and mom coming along as volunteers.

New Westminster is Eva’s home town and her uncle owns a historic shoe store on the city’s main road so everywhere I looked there were prints of the 65 Red Roses paintings up in store windows. I got to see the painting for myself for the first time. There are no words to describe just how beautiful it is. They haven’t decided yet where it will end up, but I hope it is a children’s hospital in Canada. Eva’s mom was telling me that families spend a lot of time just waiting in the hospitals, so it would be amazing for them to have a painting this intricate and detailed to spend time appreciating. It’s true that every time you look at it you discover something new.

I handed out as many donor cards as I could and I’m happy to say that 2 people registered right in front of me to donate all their organs. Inside the offices where I had a display of the dvds dozens of people told me their stories about their experiences with transplant.. A lot of people who had never seen the film before picked up the dvd. It was a really great and successful event and I also got to see some pretty amazing cars!

The next stop for selling the film is going to be Vancouver’s Leisure Society where Eva spent a lot of time last summer raising money for CF and awareness for organ donation. We are self distributing the film in Canada so right now a large portion of what we’re making on the film is going straight back into keeping this movement running. I know we are just getting started.

Phil, the co-director of the film will be in attendance at the screening of 65_RedRoses in Toronto July 18th as a part of the BITE ME! Toronto International Body Image Film & Arts Festival. For more info please click here!

Love love love,

Mish

PS: Eva’s friend Ian Bevis is riding a tandem bike across Canada to raise money for CF!

DVD arrived the other day, and while it was a bit of a punch in the gut in that it sent gusts of emotion, (tremendous empathy for all of you, Eva’s family and closest friends) it is a lovely piece of work. The cover is sensational and the clips chosen for the back of the case are perfect. I envision it in the documentary section of every video store, sooner rather than later. Can’t help but be a proud Canuck, even as it’s enraging that Eva isn’t here to revel in the attention she so rightly earned. Mostly so impressed with you, Nimisha. I love to see South Asians in the arts. Too many of us end up kicking and screaming in medical schools, thwarted writers, painters, sculptors. No joke, there. I avoided that pitfall, though my folks screamed more at me for choosing to be a writer than they did when I told them I was gay. Ha, that was a scene. “Fine you can be a writer, but why do you have to be a gay one? Isn’t going into arts, bad enough for you? You have to insult our family even more?” So sucky that Eva can’t be here for this glory. You soak it up, okay? And you create more med school drop outs, okay? Along with donor cards, hand out, “I’m an artist and it’s okay” buttons. I already have my “I’m Indian and can’t do math” one. Way to go to everyone involved with the film.

I would LOVE to obtain a copy of the documentary. How do I go about purchasing it from Washington state & getting it shipped here at this point??? I am a Mother to a 7 yr. old girl w/ CF and would really like to see this film. Please contact me!! Best wishes & prayers for your family and for Eva. She is a special soul and I saw all the amazing things she did (and still does from Heaven). She is an amazing woman and an inspiration to all of us!! SO proud of her for receiving that award from the CF Foundation in Canada as well. Very proud of everything she’s done for the CF community.

I met you outside a venue at the Mendocino Film festival and told you about my friends daughter being put on the list for a double lung transplant and their friends book and movie”The Power of Two.”
I just love 65_RedRoses and feel it would be very well received here. I would love to buy a copy right now since they are just listed #13 at Stanford Hospital. Is that possible? I could help by selling or distributing it. My friend Robin has been writing a fabulous blog about their experiences called Miracleonorder.blogspot.com. I would love to give them this movie. Her parents have been active in the cf community here. Thanks in advance. Janet

Hi All,

Any idea when my DVD should arrive? I pre-ordered the first few days it was posted back in May? I live in IL. Just wondering. The USPS is not the most realible here in my part of the state (IL) so anyone has a guesstimation it would be appreciated.

Thanks and have a wonderful weekend all!

I would also love to have a copy of the DVD. I read Eva’s blog for hours last night and was moved beyond words. I am a young mother and wife and have been battling cancer…..Reading her blog and watching her videos somehow gave me hope. I saw how positive she was and how much hope she had-she was brave, very very brave. How lucky you all are to have known such a beautiful soul.
Please let me know how or when I could purchase a DVD. I want to share her story with everyone I know!

I would love to purchase your DVD. I know it will take some time to distribute them in Europe but I’ll be waiting patiently.

Love love love,

Marta from Poland

I was fortunate to see the documentary last october when you did a screening for health care workers. I am the president of the Vancouver chapter of Perioperative nurses group and would like to do a screening or buy the DVD so we can show it to our members. I was very touched with her story. Where can i purchase the dvd?
Thanks, Lisa Scott

Just wondering how I could obtain a copy of the dvd. It looks amazing and beautiful. I have followed eva’s blog for some time and would love to introduce others to her.

In the CF community there are so many reasons to love all our families but Eva and your family have made me so proud to be a healthcare provider that can learn from this and share your enthusiasm for living life.
Many thank you’s
