Eva’s Legacy

Right now we don’t have words to express our grief and sadness over the loss of our beautiful friend Eva.

Here is an article that appeared in the Georgia Straight.

Cystic fibrosis campaigner Eva Markvoort dies

By Charlie Smith

Cystic fibrosis campaigner Eva Markvoort died on the morning of March 27, 2010.

Markvoort shared her experiences with CF in 65_RedRoses, which won three awards at the 2009 Vancouver International Film Festival. The documentary was made byNimisha Mukerji and Philip Lyall.

The former Miss New Westminster received a double lung transplant, but her body wouldn’t accept the organs. On February 24, the University of Victoria awarded her a bachelor’s degree less than two weeks after she created a farewell video.

The filmmakers told Georgia Straight movies editor Craig Takeuchi that Markvoort’s story convinced many people to become organ donors.

Markvoort was the winner of the 2010 Summerhayes award for her work on behalf of the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. She inspired many people across the country with her courage and dignity.

The award was presented to her at Vancouver General Hospital.

Eva Receiving the Summerhayes Award 2010

We urge everyone out there to talk to your friends and family members about becoming organ donors and to join our facebook group to hear more about the different ways you can support the film. Eva always said that if even one person was inspired to register as a donor after seeing 65_RedRoses – then it was all worth it. Eva’s legacy lives on through the movement that she has created for CF awareness and organ donation and now it is up to all of us to continue to share her story with the world.

Omaha Film Festival Winner!

GREAT NEWS!

65_RedRoses won the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Omaha Film Festival! We’ve got a lot of screenings coming up in the US which is pretty exciting, especially since Eva has a huge online following of American friends. Stay tuned for more updates on festival screenings and broadcasts!

This past week I was invited to attend a screening of 65_RedRoses at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan and what a wonderful event it turned out to be! I graduated from UBC’s Film Production Program in Vancouver and it was really great to meet students interested in making films at the campus up north. Many thanks to the organizers and other panelists for making the screening possible, and also to the great audience that came out to see the film. There weren’t many dry eyes in the house, and a lot of people came up to me afterwards wanting to know how they could become organ donors. In Canada all you have to do is click on the icon of Eva anywhere on the site and it will take you to the different links in the province. If you are from outside of Canada we urge you to find out how to register in your country.

I visited Eva yesterday and she’s still fighting for each breath. She’s posting on her blog whenever she can – so keep visiting and commenting, she wrote a beautiful entry last night.

Thanks for your support!

Nimisha

Eva’s Goodbye

This is a hard post for me and everyone involved in the film 65_RedRoses to make.

Eva wants to HEAR FROM YOU.

To post comments directly to Eva’s blog and view her final goodbye video please visit:

http://65redroses.livejournal.com/

(There is a link to her blog on this website page as well – if you look to your right).

Eva has not just been the subject of our film “65_RedRoses,” she was our key collaborator – an incredible talent not just in front of the lens, but behind it as well. Eva wanted to be a part of a documentary that could really effect people and show how much of an impact one person can make by becoming a donor. She has worked tirelessly with us to promote the film, which she hopes will continue to touch the lives of people around the world.

If you haven’t already registered to become an organ donor, WHAT ON EARTH ARE YOU WAITING FOR? Register today. Pass on this website to friends and family, join our TWITTER group, write to your government to finally change legislation in your country. Here in Canada, we would like to see that everyone becomes automatically registered as an organ donor, and if they don’t wish to be one, THEY should have to make the added effort of having to get their names taken off the donor list. The goal of the documentary “65_RedRoses” has always been to spread awareness about the importance of organ donation and working to find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis.

Eva, I am so grateful that as a filmmaker I got the chance to work with you and share your story.

Love always,

Mish
